For 30 years, the Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers (MABL) has been at the forefront of initiatives to promote equality for Black people who work —or want to work—in the court system and the legal profession.

In those three decades, MABL has built a reputation for advancing the interests of Black law students, attorneys and judges through networking, mentorship and advocacy.

Every year, the MABL Foundation raises money to award scholarships to students attending local law schools, but this year the gala, with the theme “30 Years Strong: Generations Upholding the Rule of Law,” promises to be a special anniversary celebration.

“Legacy members, trailblazers and MABL founders from 30 years ago will be honored for their accomplishments,” said Aisha Richardson, executive director of MABL. “Lawyers and law firms will come together to recognize this organization that enhances our community.”

The 2025 MABL Gala will be held on Nov 22 at Royalston Square in Minneapolis. The event will raise money for scholarships for students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and commitment to addressing issues that impact the Black community.

The evening’s keynote will be delivered by The Honorable Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States (2009–2015) and the first African American to serve in that role. Widely recognized as a champion for civil rights, voting access, and equal justice, Mr. Holder continues to shape national discourse through his work, advancing democracy and the rule of law.

“MABL’s work is proof that justice is built — not declared,” said Attorney General Eric Holder.  “For 30 years, this organization has ensured that opportunity is not confined to privilege, and that the next generation of Black lawyers stands on a foundation of courage, integrity, and purpose.”

The fundraiser also supports Pathways, MABL’s intensive 10-week program that prepares college students to enter law school.

“They are exceptional. They are doing their thing to become the next generation of legal professionals,” said Richardson.

Pathways, now in its second year, is a first-of-its-kind program in Minnesota and has already brought 37 students through its rigorous academic preparation.

“We help them with (law school entry exam) LSAT test prep, academic and career counseling and mentorship from attorneys and judges. We offer a $4000 stipend to each student, computers, technology and clothing support, the whole gamut. It’s a wraparound program,” she added.

The MABL Gala will be hosted by broadcaster, podcaster and activist Sheletta Brundidge. The chair for the event is attorney Jeremiah Allison, former professional football player and non-profit founder who benefited from MABL preparation programs.

“Jeremiah was a student in our program. He came to our Gala and then was hired by Medtronic where he practiced law. Now he’s with the Vikings as associate counsel so it’s a full circle moment—a football player-turned-attorney and now chairing our event,” said Richardson. “It’s a blessing to have him.”
